Before starting off the review, let me say that Fez Pocket Edition for iOS is MFI and iCloud supported, as I’m sure a lot of fans would be glad to hear that.
Alright, let’s now talk about this amazing game Fez Pocket Edition.
Fez was first released in 2012 on the Xbox. For anyone who does not know what Fez is it is a 2D platformer puzzler, set inside a rotatable 3D environment.
That description in itself sounds impressive.
Fez is literally available on every platform possible, and now it is ready to play on iOS devices as well.
For those of who, who have not had the pleasure of experiencing Fez, this little pocket masterpiece is a good place to start.
What is Fez all about?
I will not be going into details of what Fez Pocket Edition is about just so that newcomers to the game will have the great pleasure of experience the wonders of this beautiful game without any spoilers.
Just to give a brief description, you will be playing a very lovable cute character called Gomez.
In the beginning of the game, you will be given a magical Fez which you will use to explore and uncover the mysteries of your world.
By swiping to the left, you can rotate the 2D world to uncover another dimension, which you will explore.
You will essentially be collecting cubes to pretty much save the universe (There is a whole lot more to this).
The brilliant introduction to the game
Fez Pocket Edition features a brilliant tutorial which does not feel like a tutorial at all.
Then one once really step into the game, the universe, so to speak, opens up. Rotating the 2D world around can be gratifying and extremely cool.
It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “looking at things from a different perspective”, which is exactly what you need to do in order to progress in the game.
As you continue on in the game, the levels and platforms get more and more complicated, and extra satisfying when you figure things out.
A world full of mysteries
The developers have crammed in a lot of mysteries and secrets into Fez: Pocket Edition, and not all of them actually makes sense.
I’m sure the developers had wanted to fully immerse the players in the game, however, these sometimes feel unnecessary and I think even the creators knew this.
However, if you are a diehard fan and wants to explore and uncover every inch of this fantastic world, you can certainly do that.
The virtual controls
Virtual controls are always a topic of hot discussion, and it is really hard to get them just right.
Fez: Pocket Edition does a fairly good job at it as they feel responsive and fluid.
Let’s face it, some of us with big fingers will always have trouble with virtual controls, still, that is why there are controllers now for mobile gaming, and if you have one, I certainly suggest you use it.
One really good thing about Fez Pocket Edition is that if you die trying to make a jump, you start again from exactly where you took the leap from.
This is especially very handy in the mobile platform, in case you die as a result of the virtual controls. This way you do not lose any progress.
However, this game is not about making perfect jumps, rather about figuring out how best the rotate the world in order to solve and progress through the puzzles.
Does it work on iPhone X?
One thing to note is that Fez: Pocket Edition is not iPhone X supported.
The reason behind this is unknown and as the developers did not release any statement regarding this.
Whatever the reasoning behind this is, I am certain that with new version updates, this “problem”, if you can call it will be fixed.
Fez: Pocket Edition is magnificent little BIG game. We at the Mobile Game hunter are absolute fans of this title, and we were very excited when the iOS version was announced.
Having a little Fez in your pocket is not a bad thing at all.
We recommend that this game be played with a controller to fully experience all the glory, however, if you do not have one, the game is just as good.
We highly recommend that you give our friend Gomez a try 🙂
