‘HUNGRY DRAGON’ Review for iOS and Android

Hungry Dragon Review for iOS and Android

Like stories and narratives, there are a few basic shapes that a game can take. It is the mechanics you add over the top of that shape, the way that you get from A to B, which sets apart the different experiences from one and other.

So, yes, Hungry Dragon is just another game about eating as much as possible but there are few editions here that make it just as engaging if not more so than anything else in the genre.

It is simple, it looks lovely and there is an addictive crunch to stuffing humans and animals down you dragon throat.

Hungry Dragon

The game starts you off playing an adorable little dragon. To begin with you are the size of a large bird and you can eat smaller birds, fish, spiders and few other little things.

You can take on humans as well but you are going to get few bites in there to cram them all down.

The controls are perfect in there simplicity. Drag you thumb around the screen to move the dragon about and tap on the screen to activate a boost.

The Hungry Dragon world you are chopping through is a particularly big one, new locations are locked off until you get larger and more powerful dragons.

Getting those is a matter of leveling up your smaller creatures then spending some gold.

Bigger dragons can eat bigger thing, but as you grow you will find even more fearsome enemies will try to stop you from biting their face off.

Twists

There is nothing here that you might fine challenging, but there are some neat twists in Hungry Dragon that is going to keep you involved.

For starters, you can take pets with you.  These gives you boosts and buffs, and larger dragons can take more pets with them.

You can swap costumes as well and there are challenges to work your way through. Once you have completed them there is a cool down timer until you get more, or spend some gems to get them a bit quicker.

Structurally everything about Hungry Dragon is well put together. It is definitely not a revolution in terms of gameplay but them you don’t get the impression that it was trying to be one.

Instead, Hungry Dragon is a game about stuffing your face and everything here is there to make sure you gourd yourself senseless.

Final Thoughts

You are probably not going to fall in love with Hungry Dragon but it is hard to imagine anyone getting upset while they play it.

It is a solid, well produced, entertaining enough mobile game it might not have the teeth to make it legendary, and we would argue that it is more of a snack than a main course.

But we approve the ‘Metroidvania’ style backtracking and exploration and the dragons are pretty cool too.
